Precautions for Using Toyox Hoses

Please note that different products may require different handling. See the catalog for specific instructions for each product.



1. Precautions before and during use

Applications: 1.
  • TOYOSILICONE Hoses, TOYOFUSSO Hoses and other Toyox hoses are not designed, manufactured or tested for medical use, including medical treatments and drugs. Toyox therefore makes no guarantee whatsoever regarding the suitability or safety for the use of our products in medical applications.
    In particular, we ask that our products not be used in human transplants or body fluid applications, or where our products may come into contact with live tissue.
    In the case of medical use, including drugs, quasi drugs and cosmetics, do so only for personal tests of the user, with the opinion of an expert or at the discretion of the user in compliance with the laws and regulations of the local authorities.
Pressure: 1.
  • Hoses should be used within the specified ranges for temperature and pressure.
  • Hoses expand and contract according to internal pressure, so adequate space should be provided when setting up.
  • Pressure controlling valves should be opened and closed slowly to avoid impact pressure.*1
  • With applications such as electrical discharge, plasma and vapor deposition, plasticizers,*2 compounding agents and other elements may be extracted or leach out. Before use, confirm the conditions for use and the possible effects.
Fluids: 1.
  • Use a hose that is compatible with the fluid being used.
  • Before using a Toyox hose with an oil, powder, strong toxic chemical, concentrated acid, concentrated base or other potentially dangerous fluid, consult with us to ensure safe use.
  • The interior of food hoses should be cleaned before use. Use hot water no hotter than 80°C at pressure no greater than 0.1 MPa for a maximum of 30 minutes. If steam cleaning a TOYOSILICONE Hose or TOYOSILICONE-S Hose, we recommend a short cleaning period using a saturated steam pressure or no greater than 0.2 MPa and a temperature not exceeding 130° C. Frequent use may result in a shorter service life. Do not use steam on TOYOSILICONE P Hoses.
  • Do not use hoses for fuel oil.
  • The inner layer of TOYOFUSSO Hoses is made of fluororesin, which is resistant to most chemicals and solvents. Results may differ according to actual use conditions, however, so we recommend testing before use.
  • TOYOFUSSO Hoses have a layered structure, and even though the inner layer is resistant to fluids, such factors as high temperature and high pressure may result in the fluid penetrating the inner layer, causing degradation of the other layers, including swelling. Additionally, fluid characteristics and use conditions may cause wear, detachment or melting of the inner layer. Adequate precautions should be taken before use to ensure safety.
Bending: 1.
  • Use hoses at bend angles larger than their minimum bend radius.*4 Less may result in hose rupture or lower pressure resistance.
  • Powders and granular materials may cause wear. Use a hose with as large a bending radius as possible.
  • Do not use hoses such that they are bent near the fitting.
Others: 1.
  • Do not allow hoses to come into direct contact with an open flame or use them near an open flame.
  • Do not run over hoses with a vehicle or other heavy objects.
  • When cutting a TOYOSILICONE-S Hose, a TOYORING Hose, a TOYORING-F Hose, a TOYOFOODS-S Hose or a TOYOSPRING Hose, the reinforced end may come out and cause injury. Take adequate care when cutting.
  • Do not immerse the PAINT Hose in solvents. The outer layer is not solvent-resistant.
  • For quality purposes, both ends of TOYORON, SUPERTOYORON, DELIVER and TOYOFOODS hoses with an inner diameter of at least 32 millimeters are stopped off during the manufacturing process. Before use, be sure to open both ends.


2. Precautions for assembly

Tools: 1.
  • Only Toyox metal fittings or barb fitting nipples should be used for Toyox hoses. Other products may cause hoses to burst.
  • When selecting a nipple, ensure that the type is appropriate for the size of the hose.
  • Round the end of the barb fitting as much as possible.
  • When inserting the nipple barb fitting into the hose, do not use oil on the hose or on the nipple barb fitting, and do not treat the parts with fire. If insertion is difficult, use lukewarm water to warm the hose and try inserting the fitting again.
  • Insert the nipple barb fitting completely into the hose.
  • Do not use metal fittings for slide-on tubes. They may cause the hose to burst.
Clamps: 1.
  • Fasten the clamp at the center of the nipple barb fitting.
  • Fasten the clamp with the designated fastening torque.
3. Tighten the clamp appropriately. The hose may become soft at high temperatures, so exercise caution when tightening.
Other: 1.
  • If the inner lining of the pipe gets cut, the hose may burst.
    • Do not tighten excessively with wire or other materials. Use only a clamp.
    • Do not use a hammer or other potentially damaging tools on the hose to remove a clamp.
    • Do not use a damaged or rusted metal fitting over a nipple.
  • Permanent deformations*5 may occur in the plastic after assembly, resulting in a fluid leak, a fitting disconnection or a hose burst. To avoid these issues, please consult with Toyox on the type of metal fitting and the hose material you want to use.


3. Inspection precautions

Pre-work inspection: Before starting operation, check the hose for abnormalities, such as external damage, stiffening, softening and discoloration.
Regular inspection: During periods when the hose is in use, be sure to perform regular monthly inspections.


4. What to do if an abnormality is found

The service life of a hose is greatly affected by the physical properties, temperature, flow speed and frequency of pressurization and depressurization of the fluid that flows through the hose. If any of the following problems or similar signs are found in the pre-work or regular inspections, immediately stop use and replace the hose.
  • Abnormality near the metal fitting: localized stretching, bending, leakage or swelling
  • External damage: large scratches in the outer surface, cracking, or water infiltrating the reinforcement layer
  • Internal abnormalities: swelling or separation*6 of the inner surface, or wear that leads to exposure of the hose reinforcement material. If there is a problem with the inside of the hose, pieces of the hose material may become mixed in the fluid.
  • Other significant changes, including stiffening, cracking or expansion.


5. Precautions for storage

Storing hoses after use
  • When the hose will not be used for a while, remove any residue from the interior.
  • Store in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not store hoses in an excessively bent state.

4. Store in a ventilated area with low humidity out of direct sunlight. Polyurethane hoses in particular are susceptible to hydrolysis*7 in the presence of water or humidity.
5. Do not stack large quantities of hoses.


6. Disposal precautions

  • When disposing, follow the local regulations on garbage sorting.
  • Products containing vinyl chloride may generate dioxins if incinerated at lower than 800° C.

Terms explained
1. Impact pressure: When sealed water or air is rapidly pressurized due to operation of an electromagnetic valve, the pressure that hits the inner surface of the hose exceeds that of the pressure itself, which may cause the hose to burst or the metal fitting to come off.
2. Plasticizer: A substance such as vinyl chloride used to make plastics softer. Their primary components are acid and alcohol.
3. Heptane item: A test item for measuring suitability for lipids and fatty foods.
4. Minimum bend radius: The radius (R) when the test in the figure below is carried out at room temperature (23° C) and the hose diameter (D) is 10% flat. (These values have been established by Toyox.)

5. Permanent deformation: If an object is deformed and does not completely return to its normal shape after the deforming pressure is removed, that deformation is referred to as permanent.
6. Separation: When the adhesive force between the inner tube and outer layer of a two-layer hose weakens, the two portions may become separated. This may occur due to excessive bending or use at temperatures outside the tolerance range.
7. Hydrolysis: Decomposition due to the reaction of a substance with water. Substances such as polyurethane resin may undergo hydrolysis in the presence of water or humidity, resulting in cracking and decreased strength. Care is needed when storing.
